The Lim Shrimp Organisation has completed the first phase of\r\nits plan to establish a $100 million sea cucumber production facility in the\r\nYingkou Free Trade Industrial Zone in Liaoning Province, China.
\r\n\r\nWhen completed the facility, which will be called LSO\r\nYingkou Seapolis, is set to be the world’s largest indoor\r\ntemperature-controlled multi-stack multi-storey sea cucumber culture project.
\r\n\r\nThe first phase, which was allocated a budget of $25 million\r\nconsists of a million square feet of indoor culture area divided into 22\r\nmodules and was completed and stocked on 17 September. It is equipped with\r\nLim’s patented RAS, which includes protein skimmers, bio-filter, UV, ozone,\r\nsand filter, automated temperature control system, aerator, solid particle\r\nremoval, de-gas, and an in-situ automated water monitoring system. The indoor\r\nfactory unit has a three-storey fibreglass multi-tier racking system to the\r\nLiaoning sea cucumber.
\r\n\r\nThe company has pledged that the facility will be\r\nantibiotic-free, with health maintained by probiotics and “synbiotics”. The sea\r\ncucumber will be grown from 50g to 150g in three months, allowing for four\r\nharvests per year.
\r\n\r\nOther facilities in the Seapolis will include a hatchery,\r\nprocessing plant with value-add facilities, research centre that will house a\r\nbranch of the famous Yellow Sea Marine Research Centre that will have\r\njoint-research with LSO on Liaoning sea cucumber. The second phase, consisting\r\nof 100 more units, will be launched in March 2020 and completed in 12 months.
\r\n\r\nThe company says that the decision to build the plant in\r\nChina is due to policies initiated by President Xi JinPing: “to buyback or\r\nrecall all traditional aquaculture land and sea-cages and sea-farm". They\r\nsay that this has led to a 70 percent drop in Chinese sea cucumber production,\r\na 30 percent reduction in shrimp and a 20 percent reduction in fish production.
\r\n\r\n"The acquisition exercise is still in process and just\r\nlast week closed more then few hundred farms just in Hainan Island alone,"\r\nsay Lim Shrimp. "President Xi’s mandate is to acquire all tradition farm\r\nand covert it into eco-friendly, environmental friendly, and high tech farming."
